No matter when you start your career, it is never too early to think about taking it to the next level. Career progression takes planning and experience. Plan first, gain experience and set yourself up to progress to the next level.
Define progress; Set a goal. The next level could mean something completely different to two people. If you are working chairside as a dental assistant your goal may be to further your education to become an expanded functions dental assistant. Maybe you’re more interested in administrative duties and hoping to transition to the front desk. Many of our dental assistant graduates are aspiring dental hygienists. Regardless, you need to set a reasonable goal with a timeline.
Plan how it would go; Set yourself up for success. A goal without a plan is dream. Decide the steps you will need to take to get to your goal. What are the requirements of the new position? What do you need to do to be eligible for this advancement? Make a list that includes each step you need to take, how you will complete that task and how much closer it will get you to the end goal. Be specific and realistic. Furthering your education takes time and money. It can be done but you will need to put in the work.
Build a reputation for yourself; Show you deserve the next level. Be professional. Be punctual. Be reliable. Be a part of the team. There is so much value in an employee that always puts their best self forward. Leave your bad day in the car and walk into the office with a smile. Show your current employer that you are an asset. Your reputation will precede you when a position comes available in your office or you need a professional recommendation for a position elsewhere.
Always keep your eyes and ears open; Make connections. In your professional career you will make many connections. It is important to treat your colleagues with respect and the professional courtesy they deserve. Making a great first impression sets the tone for that relationship. This also includes making your intentions known. If your goal is to transition to administration from a clinical position let your employer know that you are willing to cross-train and/or fill in at the front when needed. It is important to complete tasks associated with your current position before offering to take on additional tasks, but making it known that you are interested in expanding your skill could help advance your position within the practice.
Nothing can replace experience. In order to move forward you have to put the work in now. Whether you are just beginning a career in dentistry or you are considering furthering your career, set a goal, make a plan and put your best self forward every day. Remember, our office receives requests from doctors from all over looking to hire dental assistants with varied experience. Reach out. We are always happy to help.
